When Do Bugs Come Out in Calgary? Month-by-Month Pest Timeline

Most Calgary homeowners think of pest season as a summer thing. A couple of months of mosquitoes and the occasional wasp nest, then it’s done. 

The reality is that the season runs from March through September, with different species showing up at different points, and the window to get ahead of each one is shorter than you think.

Why Calgary’s Pest Calendar Is Different from the Rest of Canada

Calgary’s geography creates a pest season that doesn’t behave quite like any other major Canadian city, and understanding why makes the timeline make a lot more sense. Here’s why:

• Chinooks can temporarily trigger insect activity well before spring actually arrives. Then a cold snap resets everything. This creates a more unpredictable early season, where insects that should be dormant in February can be stirring in January, then go quiet again, then re-emerge.
• Calgary lies between prairie and foothills. The city sees both urban pest pressure from established neighbourhoods and species that migrate in from surrounding natural areas as the season warms. That is why Calgary’s pest variety throughout the season is surprisingly wide.
• Lastly, Calgary has only about 115 frost-free days per year on average, with the last spring frost typically landing around May 23 and the first fall frost arriving around September 15. That compressed window means the entire pest season gets pushed into a tight, intense stretch.

March: Pest Season Starts Before You Think It Does

As soil temperatures begin to rise, even when air temperatures are still cold, overwintering insects start stirring underground. 

• Carpenter ants and pavement ants are the first movers. Their colonies overwinter underground and in wood structures, and they become active well before they’re visible to homeowners. 
• Spiders that sheltered in exterior gaps and under deck structures through winter begin moving again.

Chinook events in March can accelerate this activity temporarily, followed by cold snaps that push it back. But the colonies are awake regardless of what the air temperature is doing. 

April: Crawling Insects Hit First

April is when the season becomes visible for most Calgary homeowners. 

• Pavement ant and carpenter ant activity moves above ground in April. Foraging trails start appearing along fence lines, patio edges, and foundation perimeters. 
• Wolf spiders and ground spiders emerge from their overwintering spots and become active in yards. Their presence is directly tied to the insect activity they feed on, so early ant emergence means early spider sightings.

May: Peak Crawling Season and the Start of the Transition

May is the highest-volume month for crawling insects, and the beginning of a shift toward flying pests.

• Ant trails become more visible, more established, and cover more ground as workers push further from the nest in search of food. Thatching ants, the ones that build the larger mound structures in lawn areas, become noticeable through Calgary’s south and southwest neighbourhoods during this period. 
• Spiders follow the insect activity directly. More food in the yard means more spiders, and you’ll see orb weavers start building their first outdoor webs around decks and eaves.
• Earwigs emerge and become active in garden beds through May. They thrive in damp, organic-rich ground, which is the exact conditions that Calgary garden beds provide coming out of snowmelt.
• Mosquito season technically begins in May, but you’ll only see meaningful disturbance if it’s been a wet month. 

May is the last comfortable window to get ahead of crawling insects before they’re fully established and the rest of the season’s pests start layering in.

June: The Season Layers Up

• Mosquito pressure begins in earnest in June if May and early June precipitation has been adequate. Any warm, wet stretch followed by heat drives meaningful activity. 
• Wasp colonies begin nest-building in June as well. This is the month when nests are at their smallest and easiest to address, but also when they are hardest to notice. 
• Earwigs and box elder bugs become more prevalent in garden areas. 
• Ant activity remains high and is now competing for attention with the first flying insects of the season.

July: Peak Flying Insect Season

July is when outdoor living is most affected by pest pressure. Pest control now is reactive by definition. 

• Mosquito pressure peaks when temperatures are highest, and any late spring moisture has had time to support active breeding cycles. 
• Wasp nests that started in June are now established and growing rapidly. Colony populations expand significantly, and workers become increasingly territorial as nest size increases. 
• Grasshoppers emerge and become active, particularly in yards that back onto natural areas, green spaces, and ravines. 
• Deer ticks become more active as well. This is worth noting for families spending time near the Bow River system or the city’s natural reserve areas.

August: Wasps Take Over, Late Mosquito Wildcard

August is the month that catches the most people off guard, and it’s the one our technicians get the most calls about.

• Wasp colonies hit maximum size in August. Workers are at their most defensive, nests are at their largest, and stings become a genuine risk around decks, eaves, outdoor dining areas, and anywhere food is present. Wasp nest removal is one of the most common August service calls we receive across Calgary.
• If the summer has been dry and mosquito pressure has been low, August is also when rain followed by heat can trigger a surge in mosquito activity.
• Spider activity picks up again in late August, too, as spiders prepare for the coming cooler months. Orb weavers become very visible around deck lights and eaves in the evening as insect activity increases near your outdoor lighting.

September: Winding Down, But Not Quitting

• As wasp colonies begin to break down in September, workers become more erratic and defensive. The colony structure that kept them organized and purposeful through summer is dissolving, and the result is more unpredictable behaviour around outdoor living areas. September is one of the more dangerous months for wasp stings.
• Spiders are highly active through September, moving toward sheltered exterior spots as they seek overwintering sites. 
• Ant activity slows, but colonies are still foraging and positioning themselves for winter, moving deeper into soil near foundations and warm exterior structures. 
• Mosquito season wraps up with the first consistent cold nights, which in Calgary typically arrive mid-to-late September.

Treatments done now can meaningfully reduce the population that overwinters and re-emerges next spring. It’s worth thinking about for anyone who wants a head start on the following year.
