Buzz Boss’s Shawn Hart Breaks Down Worst Lawn Invaders
Summer is here, and so are the pests. On a radio appearance, Buzz Boss’s own Shawn Hart broke down what’s lurking in your lawn right after the snow melts and when the temperatures start to warm up.
And spoiler: if you’re already seeing ant hills or hearing the buzz of a way-too-early wasp, you’re not imagining things.

Here’s what you’re going to see:
Voles
If your grass looks like it’s been mapped out by a toddler with a crayon, you’re likely dealing with voles. These small rodents chew grass roots and dig shallow runways under the snow. You won’t often see them, but you’ll definitely see the damage.
Prevention Tip: Remove low-lying ground cover like junipers and add pea gravel where they burrow.
Pro Tip: Voles hate bitter-tasting sprays and habitat disruption more than bait.
Mice
Unlike voles, mice want in. They can squeeze through openings the size of a pen tip. Seal cracks, check door seals, and use bait stations outdoors to intercept them.
Ants, Wasps & What’s Next
Ants are starting to surface, and wasps are showing up early thanks to the mild winter. Expect spiders, mosquitoes, and boxelder bugs to follow.

Shawn’s Top 3 Pest Prevention Tips
- Clear out yard debris and dead vegetation
- Get rid of any standing water in your yard
- Keep lawns tidy and trees trimmed away from your home.
