Wasps are a typical part of Calgary summers. But once they settle in, they can quickly take over your outdoor space. 

As temperatures rise, wasps begin building nests under eaves, along rooflines, inside sheds, and around decks, patios, and play areas. Once a colony is established, activity can increase fast, making your yard uncomfortable and, in some cases…unsafe.

The most common wasps we see in Calgary? Yellowjackets, paper wasps, and bald-faced hornets. Yellowjackets are often the biggest concern, as they can become aggressive later in the season and are frequently found around garbage, food, and outdoor gatherings.

Since wasp activity gradually builds through the summer, early in the season, you might only notice a few. By late summer, that activity can multiply quickly. Here’s what to watch for: 

• A steady stream of wasps flying to the same spot: If you notice wasps consistently entering and exiting the same area like from under eaves, into soffits, around deck boards, or along rooflines, there’s likely a nest nearby.
• A visible nest forming under a roofline or overhang: Paper-like nests often appear under eaves, porch ceilings, sheds, or inside play structures. Early nests may be small, but they grow rapidly as the colony expands.
• Increased wasp activity around garbage bins or outdoor meals: Wasps are attracted to food and sugary drinks, especially in late summer. If they’re hovering around patios, BBQ areas, or recycling bins more than usual, there may be an established colony close by.
• Wasps gathering near entry points: Doors, windows, garage frames, and attic vents can attract wasps looking for shelter. Repeated activity near these areas may signal nesting within wall voids or exterior cavities.
• Sudden defensiveness or aggressive behaviour: As colonies mature, wasps become more protective of their nests. If wasps react strongly when you walk near a certain area, it’s often a sign the nest is close.

Activity increasing as summer progresses: In Calgary, wasp populations tend to peak in late July through September. If sightings noticeably increase during this period, it’s unlikely to resolve on its own.

Wasp colonies start small, but don’t stay that way for long. As summer progresses, nests grow, activity increases, and behaviour becomes more defensive. 

• Higher risk of stings: Wasps will defend their nest if they feel threatened. The closer a nest is to doors, patios, garages, or play areas, the greater the chance of accidental contact and stings.
• Reduced use of outdoor spaces: Decks, backyards, entryways, and garbage areas become difficult to use comfortably when wasp activity increases. This is especially frustrating during Calgary’s short warm season.
• Hidden nests in structural cavities: Wasps may build nests inside wall voids, rooflines, sheds, or under decking. These hidden nests can continue expanding unnoticed until activity becomes significant.

Recurring nesting in the same areas: Wasps are likely to rebuild in familiar locations if conditions remain favourable. Without addressing nesting sites properly, the same problem can return the following season
